Calcination of Limestone: The primary method for producing calcium oxide is by calcining limestone, CaCO₃, at high temperatures, typically between 900°C and 1000°C. This process drives off carbon dioxide, leaving behind calcium oxide.

 

Quicklime Production: The calcined limestone is then cooled and ground into a fine powder, which is known as quicklime or calcium oxide.

 

Hydration of Quicklime: In a controlled environment, water is gradually added to the powdered quicklime. This hydration reaction is exothermic, meaning it releases heat. The resulting mixture is slaked lime or calcium hydroxide.

 

Grinding and Storage: The slaked lime is then ground into a fine powder and stored in a dry environment to prevent absorbing moisture and carbon dioxide from the air, which could cause it to set or become less pure.

 

Another method of producing calcium hydroxide involves the direct reaction of limestone with soda ash (sodium carbonate, Na₂CO₃) in a lime-soda process. This reaction produces a slurry of calcium carbonate and sodium hydroxide, which is then separated, with the sodium hydroxide being recycled back into the process. The calcium carbonate is calcined to produce calcium oxide, which is then hydrated to produce calcium hydroxide.

 

In some cases, calcium hydroxide can also be produced electrochemically by the electrolysis of aqueous solutions of calcium chloride, CaCl₂, using an electrolytic cell. This process, however, is less common and typically more energy-intensive than the direct hydration of calcium oxide.
