What Is Ductile Iron Pipes?

Ductile iron pipe, made from ductile cast iron, is a graphite-rich cast iron in which the graphite has a spheroidal shaped molecular structure. This molecular structure makes the cast iron less brittle and more resistant to impact than the other varieties, which have a flaky structure. The ductile iron pipe is used in trenchless technology for water and sewer lines. Ductile iron pipes can have a life of more than 100 years if they are coated within and without with non-corrosive linings like cement, asphalt, paint, or polyethylene encasement.

What Is Seamless Steel Pipe?

Seamless steel pipes are perforated from whole round steel, and steel pipes without welds on the surface are called seamless steel pipes. According to different purposes, there are thick-walled seamless steel pipes and thin-walled seamless steel pipes. Seamless steel pipes are mainly used as petroleum geological drilling pipes, cracking pipes for petrochemical industry, boiler pipes, bearing pipes, and high-precision structural steel pipes for automobiles, tractors, and aviation.

7 Benefits of Using Ductile Iron Pipes

Long-lasting
One of the benefits of using ductile iron is that these pipes can provide well over 100 years of high-quality performance. There are ductile iron pipes all over the world that are still in service even after 150 years. One of the biggest examples of ductile iron pipe’s longevity can be found in the fountains of Versailles — they were used by the palace for over 300 years before needing to be replaced and repaired.

Improved ductility
How does ductile iron manage to overcome the constant changes in temperature, pressure, and environment? It can do so due to its higher levels of ductility. Ductility refers to a metal’s ability to be drawn, extruded, and deformed without becoming damaged. It is a good indicator of how malleable and formable the metal is. This type of pipe gets its name from how easily formed the iron alloys are. This means that ductile iron pipes are quickly manufactured, and it is likely that each pipe would be made without any fractures, dents, or similar defects. It also means it can withstand additional stress and pressure without breaking or fracturing either.

Superior strength and resistance
Despite ductile iron pipes having similar chemical properties to cast iron pipes, ductile iron has superior strength and resistance. This comes from the significant casting requirements, metallurgical processes, and improved quality control in its manufacturing. When creating ductile iron, there is an improved manufacturing process that changes the structure of the graphite in the iron. In cast iron, this graphite would be in a flake-like shape. In ductile iron, this graphite is changed into a spheroidal or nodular shape. This is achieved by adding an inoculant (usually magnesium) into molten iron during manufacture.

Easier to install
Ductile iron pipes are much lighter and easier to lay into sewer lines than most other pipes — such as grey iron or cast iron pipes. Additionally, they require no additional treatment or encasements to be laid directly against soils. However, you can choose to use polyethylene encasements to enhance the pipe’s corrosion resistance against moisture and soils. This process is also economical — the pipes are simply wrapped with sheets or tubes before installation, and the pipes remain easy to carry and lay into sewer systems.

Improved joints
Joints for ductile iron pipes are also much more simple than those used for other piping options. This means that joints are easier to install and repair for ductile iron pipes. Additionally, these joints are capable of more deflection than other pipe joints. Ductile iron pipe joints can be deflected by up to 5 degrees, while other pipes are often unable to be deflected at the joints. This means that ductile iron pipes reduce the need for pipe bending, which reduces the chances of stressing or fracturing the metal.

Lower pumping costs
Ductile iron pipes have larger inside diameters compared to other pipe options. This means that water systems can achieve maximum water flows through these pipes. As a result, your pumping mechanisms need to work less to pump water throughout your whole plumbing system. In the end, you will experience lower pumping costs due to the ductile iron pipe’s larger inside diameter. As a plus, it also has better burst strength, which helps it resist high-pressure water flows and sudden pressure surges.

Made from recycled material
Ductile iron is fabricated using recycled steel and iron scrap metals. These recycled materials make up about 95% of the ductile iron composition. The high level of recycled components also makes ductile iron pipes 100% recyclable itself. What this means is that the costs of ordering and manufacturing ductile iron are reduced, and even if your pipes get damaged, you can have them recycled into new pipes for your home.

Difference Between Carbon Steel Seamless Pipe & Seamless Steel Pipe

First, let’s talk about carbon steel seamless pipes. These pipes are made from carbon steel, an iron and carbon alloy. Carbon steel has a high carbon content, making it extremely strong and durable. Carbon steel seamless pipes are created by piercing a solid billet or bar of carbon steel to create a hollow tube that can withstand high pressure. Carbon steel seamless pipes are commonly used in construction, oil and gas, and other heavy-duty industrial applications. They are ideal for transporting liquids and gases at high temperatures and pressures.

On the other hand, seamless steel pipes are made from alloy steel or stainless steel. They are created by rolling a solid billet or steel bar and drawing it through a die to create a seamless tube. The seamless process makes seamless steel pipes stronger and more reliable than welded pipes. Seamless steel pipes are commonly used to manufacture medical devices, automobiles, jet engines, and other high-end products that require durability, strength, and precision.

Next, let’s compare the properties of carbon steel seamless and seamless steel pipes. Carbon steel seamless pipes are known for their excellent tensile strength, impact, and corrosion resistance. They are also easy to assemble, which makes them popular in construction projects. However, if not properly maintained, carbon steel seamless pipes are prone to rust and corrosion.

In contrast, seamless steel pipes are resistant to rust and corrosion, making them suitable for harsh environments. They are also highly durable and can withstand high pressure and extreme temperatures. Seamless steel pipes are often used in high-end applications where failure is not an option.

Cost is another consideration when comparing seamless carbon steel and seamless steel pipes. Carbon steel seamless pipes are generally less expensive than seamless steel pipes, making them ideal for applications where cost is a key factor. However, seamless steel pipes offer superior quality and durability, making them more cost-effective in the long run.

Manufacturing Process of Seamless Steel Pipe

Hot Rolling

Hot rolled seamless steel pipe are produced on automatic pipe rolling mills generally. First, inspect the solid pipes and remove surface defects, cut to the required length and centered on the pierced end of the pipe. Then send it to heating furnace and punch it on a punching machine. Next, the inside of the tube will gradually form a cavityunder the action of roller and plug.
Round tube blank → heating → piercing → three roll cross rolling, continuous rolling or extrusion → pipe stripping → sizing (or reducing) → cooling → straightening → hydrostatic test (or flaw detection) → marking → warehousing

Cold Rolling / Drawing

We should use cold rolling, cold drawing or a combination of these two processing ways for manufacturing if we want seamless steel pipes with smaller size and better quality.
Round pipe blank → heating → piercing → heading → annealing → pickling → oiling (copper plating) → multi pass cold drawing (cold rolling) → blank pipe → heat treatment → straightening → hydrostatic test (flaw detection) → marking → warehousing.

Extrusion

Extrusion is a kind of common technique for producing smooth stainless steel pipe, which is also the only way suitable for long lasting, smooth stainless steel coil tubing. The most standardized OD and the most intense ID pipe can be produced through extrusion cycle. Generally, the heated tube blank is placed in a closed extrusion cylinder, and the perforated rod and the extrusion rod move together to make the extruded part extrude from a smaller die hole.

6 Ways to Enhance the Longevity of Seamless Steel Pipes

Avoid Metal-to-Metal Contact
It is important to note that when you are laying steel pipe for the first time, you need to have a strategic plan for placing the steel pipe in a way that minimizes contact with other metals. Continued contact of the tube with other metals can cause frictional damage such as scratches and dents. In addition, metal-to-metal contact can also cause corrosion. Keeping seamless pipes a reasonable distance from each other will help prevent this from happening.

Reduce Seamless Pipe and Steel Movement
Loosely-arranged or dangling pipes are another reason for early damage to the steel pipes. This makes them vulnerable to friction, jolt or displacement damage, especially during transportation.

Carry Out Regular Inspection
Regular inspection is an excellent way to prevent pipe damages from getting graver or irreparable. It is a common mistake of owners to skip this step and land in situations when corrosion, leaks, and breakage start to happen regularly. Faulty pipelines can lead to accidents and costly replacement of pipes, which can be prevented earlier. To avoid such scenarios, we recommend conducting regular inspections of steel pipes. The best way to deal with leakage, corrosion, or other damages is to consult your supplier. You can also look for holes and cracks in the pipes to inform them.

Clean and Polish Steel Pipes Regularly

With watchful cleaning and polishing of seamless steel pipes, you can easily prevent the accumulation of dirt and grime in your pipes. Upon consultation with your pipe provider, you can also use specified chemicals to clean the insides of the tubes. After cleaning, do not forget to lubricate the pipes after.

Identify and Make Repairs

Even though most pipe repairs require professional help, you can easily tackle certain maintenance. If you identify minor damages early, there are some handy repairs like sealing leaks, holes and cracks with putty or specialised plumber bandages, which you can do yourself. These are surely temporary repairs but can save your pipes from long-term damage. Later, you can seek professional help to mend the pipes permanently.

Choose High-quality Seamless Steel Pipes

To get the deserving value for your money, we advise you to choose supreme quality pipes only for the best results. Consult a supplier who is an expert in the industry and can help you determine which kind of seamless steel pipe is best for your use. Know that there are certain types of tubes meant for specific applications. Therefore, it is best to consult a professional for an error-free installation.
